Why do I travel to Ukraine to teach?

The colours – with the blue at the top to symbolise the sky and yellow at the bottom to symbolise the famous Ukrainian grain under the sky – appear by the roadside and with Cyrillic letters at the top and the Latin alphabet at the bottom it reads: Ukraine.

It is 5 March 2023. Jaroslav, my driver, asks in his few words of English if I have been to Ukraine before, so he says the name of the country and I answer; no.

The country that most people are currently travelling away from, I am travelling to for one reason only; a training method that can help the amputee-injured soldiers that they do not know about in the large, newly built military hospital in Lviv.

I want to show them this method because I can. That’s why I dare to be here in a car with a person I’ve never met before, whose language I don’t speak, and who is himself in a desperate situation with a homeland under violent attack.

An acquaintance described the task as a calling, and I agree with her. A calling makes us capable of something extraordinary, and all I can think when I see the first winter landscape of Ukraine is that I want to get there quickly and get to work.

That is the personal reason why I travel to a country at war for the fifth time in August 2024. The professional reason is another.

Neuromuscular training is supported by evidence

The neuromuscular method is not my invention, but perhaps I have just seen how it is possible to use something we know, put together in a new way to create optimal training conditions for a person with more than one serious injury, which should also prevent future injuries.

Neuromuscular training is a concept from science, where it has its first evidence and clinical breakthrough about 10-15 years ago. The Association of Danish Physiotherapists calls it:

“Training that utilises plasticity in neuromuscular function’ (i.e. exploits the possibilities for development in the functions of the nervous system)” (Source)

The University of Southern Denmark, which developed the so-called GLAD training, describes ‘neuromuscular training’ as follows:

it aims to improve the stability of the muscles around the joint, biomechanical principles, muscle strength and functional properties. This type of training differs significantly from other forms of training and optimally requires regular correction and adjustment depending on the pain response. (Source)

Neuromuscular Workout methodology

Based on this scientific and evidence-based method, I have built Neuromuscular Workout as a form of training that always seeks to develop the individual’s brain, nervous system and physique to the potential the individual may have.

Firstly, I start with the person being trained – what suits them best, what are their personal goals and what is their physical potential? Then I use tests, techniques, exercises and elements from different disciplines. For example, Pilates, mobility training, strength training, walking and running, meditation and yoga.

My ultimate goal with a client is that they learn to self-train and therefore become independent of a trainer, gym or therapist in the vast majority of cases with tension, stress, injuries and ailments because this is the most optimal way for the individual to prevent injuries and strains physically and mentally in the long run.
